Description
Alpine butterfly bend is a knot used to join the ends of two ropes together.
Use
Alpine butterfly bend is just like Alpine butterfly loop only with the loop cut and is used for
joining two ropes together. The observation that the butterfly loop is secure enough to isolate a
worn or damaged section of rope within the loop indicated that the bend form of the knot would
be similarly secure.
Releasing
Non-jamming. The knot is easily untied even after heavy loading.
Security
A properly tied butterfly bend is as secure as the equivalent loop form.

Tying
There are several methods of tying this knot. Depicted here is the same method as tying the loop
version of this knot.
1. Cross over the two ropes.
2. Twist the ropes to make a second cross.
3. Bring both ends down.
4. Pass both ropes through the opening in the middle.
5. Pass the ropes all the way through.
6. Tighten by pulling on all ends.
